Buffalo's Japanese Garden
Delaware Park was designed by Fredrick Law Olmstead in 1870 as part of a city-wide park system, the first of its kind in the country. Located at the west end of Delaware Park, the Buffalo Japanese Garden was originally conceived in 1970 and completed in 1974 as a gentle, horticultural gesture of friendship between sister cities, Kanazawa, Japan and Buffalo, New York. The Garden was redeveloped and rededicated ten years ago in 1996. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the major renewal of the Garden.
It is the site of informal meetings, social occasions and a peaceful retreat within the city of Buffalo. The Buffalo Japanese Garden is different from all other Japanese Garden in the United States. It is completely open to the public, on public park land, with free access and a natural, flowing design.
About Us
Friends of the Japanese Garden of Buffalo
The Friends of the Japanese Garden is a group with a mission to spread awareness about the Japanese Garden of Buffalo and to promote the message of peace and friendship upon which the Garden was originally established. We collect donations and have a small fund which we plan to grow into substantial financial support.
